Bringing AR to E-Learning.

In recent years, the field of e-learning has undergone a remarkable evolution, particularly in the realm of augmented reality (AR), which has transformed e-learning. During this time, I had the privilege of being part of the team that designed Bookful, the world's largest and most popular AR/3D reading app. Bookful features an extensive selection of 1000 book worlds curated by top global publishers and children's brands, offering a diverse range of enjoyable and interactive activities.

My role

How I enhanced the Bookful experience

As the UX/UI designer, I specialized in enhancing the Augmented Reality reading experiences and games as well as the general app design. I designed AR game flows, new app features, UI design, created iconography and illustrations. I ensured seamless implementation and established design guidelines for consistency throughout the project.

Some books and games are staying unseen since there are more then 1000 of them.

Kids tend to stay on the same book without discovering new content.

Problems

Designing a library navigation system that serves both children and adults posed a challenge:

  • Kids need a simple, visual, and intuitive interface with minimal text.

  • Adults prefer structured search tools and detailed information.

  • Too much complexity confuses children, while oversimplification frustrates adults. A balanced approach was required to meet both needs while maintaining an engaging experience.

User personas challenges

Problems

Fast Book Navigation

Children tend to go through books quickly, which require design strategies for engagement.

Library Size Challenge

With over a thousand books in the library, helping kids find their preferred titles is a design challenge.

Unnoticed Books

Ensuring that all books get attention and are not overlooked by children is important.

Solution 1: A More Intuitive Library Home Screen

Personalisation through interests filters.

Since the team preferred minimal development effort, I focused on streamlining the experience without drastically altering the interface.

🔹 New Library Home Screen – A dedicated home screen for children, making navigation more intuitive. It includes shortcuts to:

✅ Books

✅ Games

✅ A promotional animated character

🔹 Reorganized Library Shelves (3D View) – Instead of overwhelming scrolling, I introduced a new shelf layout that includes:

✅ Main menu icons and badges for quick access

✅ Latest creations from played games

✅ Module-based shelves for better content grouping

Old library was very long for scrolling both sides: vertical and horizontal. As a result, the users were confused and couldn't find a specific book, game of function.

The previous library design required excessive vertical and horizontal scrolling, making it difficult for users to locate books, games, and key functions. This led to confusion, frustration, and an inefficient content management experience. With numerous shelves and diverse content, navigation became overwhelming for both children and adults.

The Challenge: Library Size & Navigation Issues

The Challenge: Library Size & Navigation Issues

Solutions

Personalisation through interests filters.

By changing the library structure and adding an interest filters I simplified the library navigation which improved feature adoption and onboarding. I added to child' profile additional Interests filters, which helped to sort the content according to child' interests. I undated the design system and set a new design guidelines.

To solve this, I added personalization through additional interest filters to the child's profile, improving content sorting based on their preferences. I also updated the design system and established new design guidelines.

Pop-up window with book description

Solution 2: Pop-Up Book Description for Better Engagement

Improved conversion rate by linking games and gooks together which mage items more accessible and optimized the flow.

🔹Language change

New version (new elements)

🔹Games related to the book
🔹Language as icons (for kids)

To improve conversion rates and make books & games more accessible, I designed a pop-up window linking games and books for a seamless discovery experience.

Old Version:

🔹 Book description with a static image

🔹 Language selection as text

🔹 Basic reading modes (Read to Me / Read by Myself)

New Version:

🔹 Games linked to the book for deeper engagement

🔹 Language icons (easier for kids to recognize)

🔹 Scrollable description (for parents & older users)

Improved conversion rate by linking games and gooks together which mage items more accessible and optimized the flow.

Improving user engagement and business revenue growth by adding interactions and AR games for premium AT&T subscription users.

Enhancing premium user experience and revenue growth with AR games for AT&T subscribers.

Interactive objects

Improved user engagement by adding more interaction to the reading experience and session duration metrics. AT&T 5G users are the main users of the platform. By adding brand books and games for VIP AT&T subscription users we increased business revenue.

As a Product Designer, I crafted an engaging experience for AT&T 5G users, the app’s primary audience who access the Bookful app through their 5G subscription. Knowing they spend the most time in games, I designed exclusive content with top-brand books and discovery games. By leveraging 5G capabilities, I optimized interactions, visuals, and user flow to boost engagement and retention, strengthening the AT&T partnership and driving business growth.

Avatar personalisation

Improved user engagement by adding more interaction to the reading experience and session duration metrics.

Bookful’s avatar customization feature enhances user engagement by rewarding progress with new customization items. As users unlock badges, they gain access to exclusive outfits and accessories from books and games they finished. That brings a sense of accomplishment and enables personalization of avatars, which brings satisfaction and motivation, encouraging users to keep exploring, reading, and progressing within the app.

Achievements badges

Improved user engagement by adding more interaction to the reading experience and session duration metrics.

By earning badges for completing books, exploring new content, and achieving reading goals, users—especially children—stay motivated to continue learning. This gamified approach not only enhances progress tracking but also reinforces a sense of accomplishment, making it easier for users to master new content while enjoying an interactive and rewarding experience.

Summary

As a UX UI designer I learned how to blend education and entertainment in a safe and engaging manner, enhancing children's reading skills and knowledge through AR games.

🔹Localization: Adapt the app to Spanish, Chinese, and Korean to ensure accessibility for a wider audience.

🔹Collaborated with the developer to implement AR features seamlessly and into the reading experience intro the Unity project.

🔹Collaborations with product manager to meet the deadlines to run the new features.

🔹Outsource studio management. Alignment of the planned designer, animations and technical guidelines.

As a Product Designer at Bookful, I worked closely with PMs and developers to enhance the AR-powered reading and gaming experience, focusing on accessibility, engagement, and retention. I redesigned library navigation, search, and onboarding, making content more discoverable and user-friendly. Additionally, I introduced gamification features—such as badges and avatar customization—to drive deeper interaction. I also led the design of exclusive content for AT&T 5G users, optimizing interactions and user flow to strengthen retention and engagement. Though the app was eventually acquired and evolved into the MedTech industry, my experience in EdTech shaped my ability to craft immersive, educational, and high-impact digital experiences.
